Louie on Growth Investing:

q What is growth investing?

qGrowth investing is simply finding the stocks that have stronger sales and earnings growth than the underlying market. We always want our earnings to grow faster than sales due to operating margin expansion. Cash flow is also very important. Companies with a very strong cash flow do exceptionally well. I’ve learned to stack the odds in my subscriber’s favor, by grading the stocks based on these and other criteria. With the information I’ve gathered, my team and I built a very large database that is updated every weekend. The database allows us to easily sort through our results and pick the strongest stocks for investors.

In the book I reveal how we grade stocks with the use of both quantitative and fundamental factors. There’s a quantitative grade that measures institutional buying pressure. The stronger the buying pressure, the safer the stock. There’s also an eight-factor tried and true fundamental model that ranks stocks with their sales growth, margin expansion, earnings stability, earnings momentum, cash flow, return on equity, analysts earnings revisions, and earnings surprises. When we grade the stocks under these factors we essentially get a power ranking for each stock—essentially providing clear buy/sell/hold advice. In the book we’re explaining how we calculate all of these ranking and of course, how to use them to our advantage in beating the market.

q How did you begin your career in growth investing?

qMy career actually began in Berkeley, California where I was being trained in indexing. I was trying to figure out how to mimic the S&P 500 with less than 500 stocks, but I had a problem—I kept beating the market! I discovered that there were anomalies and efficiencies in the market. I’ve learned to take that knowledge and capitalize on it. In this Little Book, I share with you the very secrets to investing success that I use day-in and day-out.
